What would be considered high hours on a 4 stroke motor. Looking at a 2003 70 4 stroke suzuki for a repower of a Boston whaler. Is wear and tear diffrent on a 4 stroke vs a 2 stroke. The motor has 850 hours on it. Worth the money or truoble waiting to happen.
Thank you

Re: High or Low hours on a 4 stroke.

With normal care and maintenance that engine should be good for 3,000-5,000 hours, Westy.

One caution. On routine maintenance DO NOT let anyone adjust cam drive belt tension by any method other than described in the Service Manual.

The only real problems I have heard about were a few engines in which the belt was overtightened and broke the nose off the cam.

Worth the bux? How many bux? Year old and 2 year old DF70s coming off lease with about 1500 hours have been bringing between $2500 and $3500.

It's a truly great engine and loves being on a Boston Whaler 17. I have one on my Montauk and it is the best outboard I ever owned. That is a lot of outboards.

Good luck. :)
