How can I tell the pitch of my prop?

I did a search of the archives for the answer to this question. Some said it should be marked on the prop.... I looked on mine and couldn't find anything that seemed to designate the diameter and pitch. The diameter I can figure out, but the pitch? How do you go about finding out what the pitch is if there are no markings? <br /><br />I am fairly certain I am going to need a prop with a bigger pitch (I am have put in a 5.7 liter Mercruiser in place of an older 5 liter. This is on a 1988 Alpha 1). I read where increasing the pitch by 2" will decrease the rpms by 300-400, but I need to know what mine is to know where to go from there!

I had the same situation with a used Land and Sea torque shift that wasn't marked. Found a large prop shop in the yellow pages that had a machine to read props. Took it to them and they did it in 2 minutes for free.

There is a number stamped on the side - it looks like BP192<br />The "P" is questionable. It could be several things (it looks like it was struck twice). It could be an R, or an A, or any number of other characters.

My guess is a 19 pitch. What is your wide open RPM with the existing prop? Also what size, weight and hull style are you running?

You could start out with a test-prop from a shop. This way you'd know the pitch and eventually end up with the one that suits your needs.
