How can I tell?

I purchased a 1987 Regal Majestic 210XL...first boat. It has an OMC Cobra outdrive but how can I tell the engine type and HP? The last owner was clueless and said he "thought" it was a 170 HP Mercruiser V6 but nowhere on it does it say that. Emails to Regal has got me NOWHERE. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks

-JustMrWill

Re: How can I tell?

Can you give us a model number? There is usually a sticker there that tells it all. The first two numbers will tell you the displacment. Third is the number of barrels the carb has. IE: My omc says 502. That means 5.0L of displacement and i have a 2 barrel carb(hopefully not for long: speaking of: anyone know where i can get a 4bbl iron intake for a Ford 5.0?) The letters/numbers after the first three tell you the year the engine was manufactured and options like power steering.

I have looked (I think) pretty thoroughly and have not found anything on the top, front or sides of the engine. Where exactly should this sticker be? Maybe there is something covering it? I will look again after work today. Thanks.

Re: How can I tell?

You either have a OMC or Merc not both. Chances are its a 4.3 w/ a 2 or 4 barrel carb. What carb you have makes a difference as to how much hp you have. Search other posts because there is alot of debate as to how many horses this v/6 has. Some say 2 barrel has 175 and 4 barrel has 205. I have the 2. Search other posts for which shift cable you have(black or red) as well. There was a recall on the black

My friend said I have a 4 barrel...I am pretty sure cable is black. I will upload some pics to show it better.

w/ 4 barrel your at 205 h/p supposively. Change black shift cable. There's some prior posts w/ a website that talks about omc cobra shift cables. Stuart I believe. The guy knows what he's talking about

Re: How can I tell?

Just a caution on that shift cable because there are some after market ones out there now that are black. Someone could have put one of these in because it's very hard to believe you would still be running on the original black one for 16 years. The motor ID plate is usually on the Port rocker cover, some even have one on the thermostat housing.

Re: How can I tell?

So far you guys have been great...thanks. I bought this boat on a whim (got a great deal) and it is a BIG learning curve for me (not totally clueless, but not a master mechanic). I am spending this summer going through every system and learning what I can. I have the OMC Maintenace manual for it now but what I don't have is a "User's Manual" for the actual boat. I don't even know stuff like weight, gas tank capacity, optimum RPM's, temp etc. If you could point me to any online (or offline) reference, I would be in your debt.

Thanks again.

Re: How can I tell?

Looks like a omc 4.3ltr w/rochester 4 barrel according to prior posts about 200 horses. Is it the lighting or should you replace those belts?

Re: How can I tell?

They are marginal at best. Belts will be replaced before she hits the water. I am taking my time on her to make sure I don't screw anything up. I don't have a truck to pull her yet so I am in no big hurry. I MIGHT get her wet before the winter. Until I feel more comfortable working on her I am doing the cosmetic stuff (re-vinyling trim...replacing rotted wood...removign unwanted "nicities" (gonna be my dive/fishing boat). I have only run her once for like 5 minutes just to make sure she ran (yes I used muffs). I didn't feel comfortable running her for any longer until I KNOW she's ready.
