How dose an electric choke work on a 3.0lx work?

Could somebody explain to me how the electric choke works on my 3.0. I'm haveing cold starting issues and based on my knowledge of dirtbike and snowmobile motors I think my proble has to do with the choke. But I don't under stand how the electric part of it works.

When 12V is put to the choke coil when you start your engine, the electric coil in the choke gets hot and expands. There is a hook on the end of this coil that slowly pushes the choke plate open as the engine warms up.
