How Much Rot Is Too Much Rot?

Forum,
that may be a dumb question. My Four Winns 225 Sundowner began to leak at the transom mount. I inspected with a mirror and light, along with some tapping to determine how much rot is occurring, and discovered some rot starting at the drain and going about 5 or 6 inches above the bottom transom bolts. My question is if this portion of my transom is rotted does this mean new transom? If so, I gather that composite is the way to go. Otherwise, the boat is in great shape for a 1992, inside and out, except for the above.

Thanks in advance
Steve

If it's leaking....it's shot and should be replaced. Rot is like cancer and once started will continue. As you mentioned your boat is in otherwise excellent condition, I'd think you'd be a good candidate for Seacast or Nidabond.
