Good day all.

I have to replace the ignition switch on my 1995 Hurricane Deck boat. It has an Evinrude 90 on it.

Go the replacement switch from our local service department. Guy told me it is a universal model (Sierra MP39760). Had a pretty simple question actually but not straight forward.

My old switch was configured like this:
S - Black wire w/ Yellow jacket
C - Purple/White Sripe
A - Solid Purple (2 wires)
M (OUT) - Solid Black (4 wires)
B -
M (IN) - Black/Yellow stripe

New switch is like this:
M (Magneto IN) -
B (Battery) -
M (Magneto OUT) -
C (Choke) -
I (Ignition) -
S (Solenoid) -

I'm guessing that the only difference is between the "A" on the old sitch and the "I" on the new one correct?

Thanks kindly

Well, Presuming the motor is about a 1995 model, you have a couple of problems. You might check purple/white. normally choke is yellow/black. Check solenoid as it is usually yellow/red

S should be yellow/red; B should be red or red/purple; C should be yellow/black; M should be black, other M should be black/yellow. I should be purple;

So here is a pic of the switch prior to me disconnecting everything:

And here is the diagram of the new one:

Now when I first wired it up the other day (before I noticed that each pole was individually lettered), I wired it up by sight as they appeared the same. The motor did try to start but the gauges didn't work. I immediately disconnected the battery and waited until today when I can double check the wiring.

It wasn't until after the fact that I noticed the old switch had the "A" and the new switch has an "I".

Re: Ignition Switch Replacement

if your dash lights still are not working push the key in and see if the lights come on as its easy to switch purple with purple with white stripe.

As the link i posted showed A and I are the same thing its just different names for the same thing

The choke circuit is purple with a white stripe
