Is there a way to jack up the blower on a furnace?

Got a new furnace last week, a two stage. It doesn't seem to move as much air as the last one. I am worried that when it is summer it won't move enough air to cool down the house and during the colder months not move enough air to heat the home. 2000+ sq ft. 60,000 btu's.

On mine there are many taps on the motor that let you pick blower speeds to suit the house

It has a place to park the ones that are not in use to keep the sparks and smoke in the motor :)

There should be an additional winding as mentioned above from the fan motor that is not in use.A schematic inside the furnace panel should identify the color of each and their speed.Bare in mind that in the cool mode that it is probabalyalready wired to a higher speed than in heat mode. The fan speed in most gas furnaces is hard wired through normally closed points on the fan relay and initiated by temp actuated limit switch. The fan speed for cool mode is initiated by the fan relay. You can test whether the speed in cool will be higher than it is presently wired for heat by flipping the fan control on you T/stat to on instead of auto. This energizes the fan relay and bypasses the limit switch fan speed.Normally high speed fan is wired for cool mode and slow speed for heat mode.

Hi POINTER, I'm no expert in the field, and realize there are many different furnaces out there, and differences in the insulating efficiencies of houses; but.... is 60,000 btu enough?

I have looked at several online furnace size charts, and all of them recommend a larger furnace, unless you have a very energy efficient house.
Here is one that even breaks the USA down into 5 climate zones.

Just something to consider.

It has been 60,000 in the basement for 17 years. In addition I have 3 quotes from 3 different guys that state the same size. I guess I would have to go with that as this is something I know little about.

But then again, who knows? ? ?

I know little to nothing about it either Pointer, but thought it was worth mentioning.

My house leaks like a sieve, so a 60k unit won't keep up in the winter.

You already have the furnace installed ,right?I was thinking that your primary concern was cfm of air flow. But then again, who knows? I'll bail out on this one.

Re: Is there a way to jack up the blower on a furnace?

ob,

You were right on. I found the wiring schematic and it seems that the cool is set on H while the heater is wired for what they call L-M. I am assuming that the old furnace probably didn't have but a single speed. I just remember the drapes moving when the blower was on. I am a little confused that perhaps I am being critical of the new system as it keeps the house comfortable, but I just can't get used to the less than usual air flow.

In addition I turned off the aprilaire system as the filter was shot. I have picked one up today and will be installing it. I may not be used to the dry heat that is now heating the home.

Keep you posted.

BTW, yes it is already installed.

Adjust or clean the summer switch since you already have a two speed motor, switch should be set for furance to have burner still engaged when fan comes on eh!

Re: Is there a way to jack up the blower on a furnace?

It sounds like it is setup just fine and probably better than the original single fan speed furnace. The reason that low speed is setup for heat mode as opposed to high speed is a comfort dynamic that is engineered into AC/heat systems. The logic is that if high speed fan is used in the heat mode it tends to produce a quick blast of warm air which in turn satisfies the thermostat setting prematurely and leads to what is refered to a short cycling the sysyem. If memory serves me correctly, which it sometimes doesn't,a standard central heating and cooling system calls for 250-300 cfm of air flow per ton (12000 btu)in heat mode and 450 cfm per ton (wet coil) in cool mode.High speed fan in auto mode will deliver slightly more than 450 cfm as by design because a wet evaporator(indoor) coil will restrict air movement somewhat.Probably more than anyone needs to know ,but hey I went to school for two years on it many years back and worked the trade for some time so I have to blow this info off somehow.8)

Yes, I work with pumps and short cycling is the deathnail for most. I think I am going to leave it alone. I got the aprilaire fired back up and the house feels great. Some of us, namely me, sometimes just can't leave well enough alone. d:)
