Ok... after calling numerous marinas and looking on the internet i found two places to deal with. I need my 1986 Evinrude rebuilt or buy a rebuilt powerhead. I found a place in oklahoma that will rebuild my powerhead for $1800 dollars and gives me a year warranty. I just have to pay shipping one way. The company is Tenkiller Marine, if anyone knows of them please comment on there work. My local marina can get me a rebuilt powerhead for $2300. I know its five hundred dollars and that is quite a big chunk but i still don't know what to decide. Someone please advise me on what to do.

Why do you need to replace/rebuild it? And if you do, personaly I would prefer to rebuild my existing unit if the crank is good and the block is boreable.

Good luck!

I would prefer to deal locally for something like that. But that issue aside, you might very well be able to find a good '86 powerhead on a unit with, say, a bad lower unit. It would then be a matter of either doing the exchange yourself, or paying one of the local marine mechanics to do it.

just thinking of options....

i need to rebuild it because two cylinders are really low on compression and when i ripped it apart the cylinder walls were scored. how hard is it to find a powerhead that has a bad lower unit? i have been looking for weeks now and can barely find a price on a powerhead. lol...right now i am losing so much fishing time up in NY state i just wanna get something on it and go...then again i don't like to spend more money then i have to

Shaun,

The time pressure works against you. Maybe you could find a used motor to replace the one you have. That might prove to get you out on the water quickest. It's true you may have some problems with the "new" motor, but you know for sure you have serious problems with the current one. If you shop with a little care (Get a sense of the history, do a compression check, see and hear it run before you buy it, etc.) you should be fine. Maybe one of those local marinas has a used unit they can sell you -- and put on the boat for you. There may not be a warranty, but the marina is probably not too likely to sell you a known lemon. There are lots of options -- but they do take some time and patience, unfortunately.

been there, done that.....

shaun,
I agree with what Dhadley said. You would be better off rebuilding what you got and should be much cheaper. Cylinder wall scores are no big deal depending on how deep they are. Any automotive machine shop should be able to hone or bore it for you if your local boat mechanic is not equipt for it. Sometimes you can hone it yourself, depending on the depth of scores and your experience, and use oversize rings. If you are in a hurry by all means by the rebuild. Me, I would rather lose a few days of fishing and have more money to spend for other purposes. If you decide to do it yourself, buy the manual. Parts are not that hard to get either.
Good Luck,
Mike

Hi Shun,
I have used Golden Precision Marine in Eagle Rock, mo. with very good results, quick and easy. They also have a 1 year warranty. I have rebuilt most of the engines that I have come into contact with, but sometimes the block is in such a condition that it makes it cheaper to replace.
My 2 cents worth

The most important thing is often the most over looked. Why did it do what it did? If we don't figure out the cause, it most likely will happen again.

Was #2 cyl scored the worst?

Good luck!

Re: Its my last question....I swear!!!

Dhadley makes a strong point. I had a 2 stroke die before because of using fuel that had gasohol in it. I don't know about fuel in the NE but here in the mid west it's abundent if you don't watch what you are buying. Apparently the alcohol in the fuel separates the oil in the fuel mixture and causes a dry burn at especially high rpm. I personally would stick with local rebuilders just for warranty sake, not to mention shipping time and money. Don't know if it helped or not, just adding to the confusion.
