J50 88 Outboard Dies when trying accelerate

I have a J50TLCCS Johnson Outboard 50 1988. It has been out of the water for eight years. I started working on it again a few months ago. I got it to run after cleaning out the carbs (dual) and then fixing a lot of mechanical things like the tilt/trim motor. I put it in the water and I could not keep it running. Every time I tried to accelerate (really just apply any throttle) it lugged and died.

I brought it back home and rebuilt the carburetors, including replacing the high and low speed jets. It started fine but then seemed to die after idle for a while. Next I replaced the fuel pump and cleaned up some wiring (like what you see in the 2nd image), but I still have the same symptoms. It starts when cold, but will not stay running. If I throttle up it lugs and dies immediately. Earlier I thought this was just flooding so I bought the factory float gauge and checked the floats. They seem to be pretty good.

I'm running out of ideas. The two remaining are: 1. Flooding because the floats are still wrong. 2. Timing. I'm having problems figuring out how to get the timing set. My book doesn't seem to match whats on my engine. I'm attaching two images that make me think this module adjusts the timing. The first image is the front cover to the carbs. It shows the timing value (on the top middle) and an picture of the module (lower left of the cover) that led me to believe it might adjust the timing. The next image is the module itself.

I would appreciate any advice on what should be my next diagnostic approach. If I could get back in the water by this fall. Wow that would be a dream.

Thanks in advance.
Eric H.

Re: J50 88 Outboard Dies when trying accelerate

I had a similar issue with my motor, turned out it was just a fuel problem being it couldnt keep a vacume on the line and would bog down and die. On this book I have, here is what it list to chek for your trouble shooting. Hope this helps

No acceleration, idles well but when put in full power dies.

A. high or low speed needle set to lean.
B. Dirt or packing behind needles and seats.
C. High speed nozzle obstructed.
D. Float level to low.
E. Choke partly closed.
F. Improper timing and syncronization.
G. Fuel lines or passages obstructed.
H. Fuel filter obstructed. Fuel pump not supplying enough fuel.
I. Not enough oil in gas.
J. Breaker points improperly gapped or dirty.
K. Bent gearcase or ehaust tube.

Thanks,
What book are you using because mine doesn't have such a nice diagnostic list as that.

I came across this and picked it up at the library, it covers 30 hp and above prior to 1969 but I figured that would give you some idea of what to check for. It has a good section on trouble shooting and pictures of what stuff should look like. Like diagnosing whats happening in the motor by how spark plugs look, shows how needle valves should look etc.
its called
Old outboard motor service manual - volume 2

Another book you may want to check out is called
Outboard motors - maintenance and repair manual
By Jean Luc Pallas

This book has great picture images, diagnosis information and how to remove / clean and adjust parts on your motor. If you are a visual person I recommend this one for sure.
