jet prop

i just bought a 1975 johnson 135 with a jet prop and was wondering if the motor still has a water pump or was is used to cool the motor. if it does have a water pump how do i check if it is stiil ok, or replace it. i guess my real question is how do i know if the motor is being cooled properly. thanks

Your motor still has a water pump, in the same location as a stock motor. Most are force fed with the pressurized water after the jet impeller. From my personal experience the added water pressure causes the waterpump seals to fail quicker. It might be worth pulling the pump just to check the seals. Again, that is just my opinion. If you can hold your hand on the block for at least 3-4 seconds before you must remove it, then it is most likely cooling fine. Harbor freight tools sells an infrared thermometer for about $20, A cheap way to know exactly how hot she's running.
