I have a 1983 Johnson J35ELCTS , the control box is shot on it, the nylon or plastic parts are broken. I don't know what to look for as far as buying a new or preferably used control box. What years and horsepower motors would work for me? Here is a picture of what I have now.

Re: Johnson Control box replacement

hey ragtop....I was a GS man( young man)..that was my first ride 1970 burgundy skylark GS....I was a Buick freak back then!!

I have some older controls... if i have two still, Ill sell you one($50 shipped).....I am not sure of the years...i got one when i was given a 1981 50 hp.....and i have another that came when i bought a 1988 70 hp...but I guess that doesnt mean they are th same years as the motors...Ill check and see if they look just like yours.

PS: i think the control you have didnt come out until 1991 or 1992!!!!

I am guessing you checked for the parts you want already?? or you asked a dealer?

let me know if you might be interested....

Hi Bob,

Bet you wish you had that one back now eh? 70 GS is bringing pretty good $$$ now-a-day's. We have owned ours since 92, all original and numbers matching southern car. Here's a picture of ours.

I have looked everywhere for the parts to repair this control, on-line (no luck) and locally (laughed at...you want what!) parts are discontinued. If you have a spare in working condition I'd happily buy it from you. My boat is no fun sitting at the dock.

I dont have a digital picture of mine, unless i go scan a hard copy someday.....my buddies have some really desirable models two GSXs both stage 1 4 speeds!! and a 1965 GS race car.

a guy at the local cruise has a 1971 gs coupe in black that pulls the wheels!!! does in the 10's at the track..

i built my 455 with all kenne bells stuff back in the early 80s..had an offenhauser dual quad intake to install after I worked out all the bugs on my rebuild...allas it never got installed and I sold it to one of the friends

ok going home tonight and pouring over the controls.... you need the cables as well??? second thought... if they are on you get them, because i dont want to take it apart to remove them!! ha ha

I've got the same problem with the same control box. Mine is on a 1990 Johnson 120. I was able to find the part I need on E-bay and it should be here this week. Do you possible remember what yours looked like inside? I'm assuming that the middle "bump" on the shift lever assembly mates with the middle "valley" on the shift and throttle assembly when in neutral but mine was completely torn up so I couldn't tell how they originally lined up for sure. I haven't been able to find a diagram aside from the parts breakdown to see what it should look like and of course it's not covered in the manual.

Hey Bob Johnson,

You wouldn't by any chance want to part with that other one would you? It sure would make my life easier.

Bob, Did you end up selling the control box. If not I would be interested in buying one. My nylon parts inside are all torn up. Just bought new cables and now I have a box that's useless. Thanks, Mike

I bought the one box, not sure if he has the other still. I may have some pics of the insides, if I do I'll post them.
