I have a 1964 johnson super seahorse model number V4AL-16D, it is a 75 hp motor. i was wondering if lower untis from any other years or hp ratings would work on this motor.

Re: johnson lower unit question

Is that manual shift or Electramatic shift?

The manual shift lower unit was used on all the V-4's except the 90 & 100hp, from 1960 up through 1968. The 1960 was different, but will fit if you use the whole unit. But I would avoid doing that, since there was a reason they changed it.

The electric shft lower unit was the same on all V-4's except the 100hp, up through 1968.

it is electromatic shift. but i was reading somewhere on here that you can convert it to manual which is more desirable because there is less that can go wrong with them. but i wouldnt mind having electromatic because i like working on motors.
