Johnson Ship Control Question

I have a 65hp Johnson Outboard. Not sure the year but it would probably be around a 1968-1972. My question is can anybody direct me to any information on the operation of the ship control. I attached a picture. My other boat had one lever. Straight up for neutral to start, forward for forward, back for reverse, pretty idiot proof. Not sure what either thing is for on this or what position things need to be in to attempt to start. Thanks for any help with my really vague question.

Re: Johnson Ship Control Question

That type of control has separate levers for shifting and throttle.
The ones i have used had the shorter lever as the shift lever, the longer as the throttle....not sure if that was universal throughout OMC products and other makes....but would think so.

To start, shifter should obviously be in neutral, and throttle just below 1/2 way....usually...:)

Good luck.

Re: Johnson Ship Control Question

These are pretty simple controls. The black short lever is for changing the gears and the longer red handle is for the throttle. Straight up and down for the black lever is neutral, forward is forward and backwards is reverse. With the gear selector in neutral the throttle should be advanced as far forward as it will go for fast idle / starting. Once the outboard is running pull the red lever all the way back to slow the idle down and to shift gears. Do not try to shift gears with the throttle advanced as the outboard will not like it. It is an easy way to end up breaking things.

You should also have a separate ignition switch for starting the engine as well as engaging the choke.

Re: Johnson Ship Control Question

Thanks for the info! I love the boat and it is in great shape! I am hoping to repair and salvage the engine just to keep it together as one unit.
