I have a Jack plate mounted 1989 150 hp Johnson that is bad. I found a late 80's 75 hp Mariner that is for sale. What all is envolved in changing over to the Mariner as far as mounting, electrical and steering? Thanks very much.

150hp down to 75hp, get a smaller boat. I can't imagine a boat that was properly powered by a 150 that could perform satisfactorily with a 75.

Mounting should be the same, steering depends, gauges and controls will need to be replaced.

The 75 will do just fine for where i will be fishing. I am not going to be in Texas to fish Toledo Bend or Sam Rayburn. I just needed to know what to change to get the motors switched.

Mounting bolts might fit. Steering will fit. Fuel line is easily adaptable. Electric and shift and throttle cables and control are completely different. Gauges should work.

Re: Johnson to Mariner swap

Hi Dave,

I just went the opposite way....Mercury to Johnson. Here is what I found.

* Control Box and cables are different, they will have to be changed.

* If you are using Teleflex or Morse standard steering, the cable will be the same; however, the Mercury/Mariner motor has a different sized nut on the tilt tube opposite of the steering cable nut. Easy find and easy fix.

* Since your 150 Johnson is not a "Systems Check" Motor, the old gauges should work fine with the Mercury/Mariner 75. You may have to change the settings on the back of your tach. Everything else can be retro-fitted.

* Mounting bolts (and hole pattern) will be the same.

* Fuel Line fitting (on the motor) is different.

Actually, the 75 Mariner will surprise you. It is a pretty gutsy litle motor.
