Kerosene heaters

I'm looking at one of those kerosene heaters that are shaped like a mini-cannon. Does anyone have one of these? I have heard that they are loud - are they so loud that they make working unbearable?<br /><br />Sean

They are very loud , EE and dont put them too close to what you dont want burned up The one we used worked great , but the heat comming out of the end of that thing was ...whew!!!

Yea they are loud, but set it in the back of the garage and point it to the front and it will warm it right up.

They also make a heater like that that run off propane. I have one of those that use in my shop. It has a thermostat sa ya wont get too hot. Have you thought about a radiant heater that sit on a 5 gallon propane bottle? they put off lots of heat and not nearly as loud. You can get one out of Norhten Tool for about 36 to 40 bux.

A propane bullet heater is the way to go to heat up an area pretty quickly. They don't stink as bad as the kerosene heaters.

There are several styles of propane heaters that are much more pleasant to use than the type of kerosene heater you are talking about. We call those types "Salamander heaters" around here but I have no idea why. They are smelly and loud but do heat up a large area fairly fast. My favorite for a garage or shed is propane and sits on the floor. I believe mine is a 50,000 BTU and was only about $60.00 from Northern Hydraulics.

My vote goes to the propane Convection heaters, not as loud and don't need power cost is almost the same.

You mean a Salamander http://www.mastersalesonline.com/allpro/forcedair/index.html They get real hot in front of them. I have a simle kerosene heater which works pretty good. I have been using it almost 18 years and only gone through 3 wicks.

I just bought one of those from lowes, was on sale for half price and I bought the thermostat for another $35 dollars. Total cost was around $130, it is a 60,000 BTU heater and will heat my garage up in a hurry. It is a little loud, but it is bearable. It also runs on diesel, but I think diesel would stink a little more. All in all, I like it, especially when it is cold as heck outside and I have work in the garge that I want to do. Don't put anything right in front of it though.

Be safe and have a CO detector out there, even if it's just a battery one.

You have a heater going that sounds like a 747 and you worry about CO, better worry about your ears. <br /><br />J/K, by all means have one if you are in an inclosed area.

Those torpedo, salamander heaters are very loud, two people wouldn't be able to have a conversation in a garage without shouting or standing right next to each other. The kerosene ones stink and make your eyes burn and water. The propane fueled ones don't smell as bad. Both give off lots of heat and moisture and consume lots of oxygen. Run either in your garage for a half hour while you work and you will be stumbling outside for fresh air. These heaters are not good for enclosed spaces. They sure can put out the BTUs though.

I have a Daytona brand 150,000 BTU torpedo style. Works great. It is noisy, but definatly puts out the heat. I used it in a 3500 sq ft insulated steel building, (no inside walls) at 30 degrees it would maintain about 70 degrees. Took a little while to get there though. Seems like it burned about 3/4 of a gallon of kerosene an hour @ $2.80 a gallon. It will even work outside in open air, just aim it at your ars and get busy. Got mine at Grainger's.
