Can someone make some recommendations on books and DVDs that teach how to do repairs on fiberglass boats. Things like scratch repairs, gel coat techniques, gouge repairs etc.

hi....as woody said....you got it here.

i have scanned u tube for good vids.....but...lol...saw as many different ways as there are boats.

your best bet...is to post the pics of the damage here....and we can tell you how to proceed.
each scratch/ nick and gouge is different and might require more than just mixing up some gell paste and filling and fairing it.

i am currently repairing multliple scratches/ gouges on a 30 footer.....some sections required a full spray.....and some just sanding.

oh....matching the gellcoat color is a different story....lol

cheers

That's an understatment, maybe just me, but I've never gotten a perfect match, gotten close a few times, but if there are a lot of them I just Imron the whole boat.

Good Luck

matching gell is a real black art.
i think the only way to get perfect is to order the stuff from the mfgr.....even then sun fade is a killer.
im currently doing a beep blue with a tinge of red and black....
100 different mixes so far !

Can you say Crownline lol..

Get some purple...really..

YD.

I guess Im the blackbelt of gelmatching LOL.. .. .. blurr your eyes *HINT*.. look for the colors..dont go dark so fast..

There are Colorsl..and then there are Hues.. Bring the lighter colors First...then Mud them out ..

You have to wash the pigments out in your final color ( add clear to your custom match when matched before you spray or the color will swing more ) * Hint * . .. .. 10-20 % after the color match ..

This is for darker ( longer lasting ) gel repairs..

I understand about colors and hues (adobe photoshop can teach you alot there), but what do you mean with the term "mud" them out? I'm pretty good with fiberglass but terrible with gelcoat and color matching.

Add the Black Last is Mudding..

YD.

PS. Unless your matching a Black color.. but if its Dark..get Darker Blues or Reds etc.. Black is your Basic Last Pigment to bring it in. With white..Allways should refrain from adding Black untill the END of the match to " mud " it out ( bring it darker ) .. you should allready have the Hue.

PSS. Im not kidding about having Purple in your kit :) .. Good stuff there ;) .. really..
