As I mentioned in my other recent posts - I am helping my Dad with his Mercruiser motor. I am rebuilding it. He bought this "new" motor about 8 or 9 years ago from a local shop. He had a 3.0 liter in his sportcraft that they replaced with another 3.0 liter... or so they said.

Upon disassembling this motor and having the cylinders honed (they were not worn badly enough to rebore), I bought all the rings, bearings, gaskets etc I needed and proceeded to put things back together. Things went well until I went to gap the rings. They overlapped by about a quarter of an inch. I figured I had been given the wrong rings. I measured the bore, expecting 4". Lo and behold I find 3&7/8" instead! Upon further investigation this is a 2.5 liter not a 3.0 liter. They even put a 3.0 liter valve cover on it! Live and learn.
Just venting. Things will be fine. At least I didn't open the head gasket set, and rod bearings. The mains are the same, (good thing as I already installed them). And the lower gasket set was the same.
