lifting eye on 2002 115hp 4 stroke engine EFI

There is 2 lifting eyes on my motor. Are these eyes for lifting the entire motor or just the power head or just the part of the cylinder head they are attached to?

Here is how Merc recommends you lift the complete motor.



If these are the lifting eyes you are referring to (Highlighted in yellow) I sure wouldn't use them to lift the complete motor. Powerhead yes, but not the whole motor.

My 90 manual shows that the engine is lifted by the eye. I made one with a suitable nut and welded a steel ring onto it. Works fine. Really there is no other place to grab the engine to lift it. The tensile strength of these hardware/shafts is in the 10,000s of #s/inch capacity. My engine weighs 350#. Go figure!
