Lookin at a boat....What is a JohnRude outboard?

I am considering a new fishing boat, it is a 26ft center console. Early 90's. Pretty decent shape and a good price.

Question is, What the heck is a JohnRude outboard. It has twin 200 v6's that say "JohnRude" on the cowls. They seem to be OMC's but could they be a cheap knock off??? The owner is the original from new and he says they were like that from the dealer.......

Anyone see these before???

I don't think it was ever anything official. It's just what people often call OMC outboards. Johnson/Evinrude since they are pretty much identical.

have to say I have never heard of it s a make. Only thing I know of is the "Johnnyrude" generalisation to pretty much identical motors with the brand names of Johnson and Evinrude.

Yeah, I know they are identical motors made by OMC. But like I said, they actually say "JohnRude" on the cowling. If it wasn't the original owner I would think someone just did that but he says that was how they came form the dealer.....

someone painted that on the cowls as a joke. Someone else isn't telling the truth, or a dealer did it to his own boat and then sold it as a demonstrator.

I have always wondered why the JohnRude or JohnnyRude appellation is always used instead of RudeJohn or RudeJohnny:)

"JohnnyRude" flows off the tongue far more smoothly than "RudeJohnny" and doesn't imply an insult to folks named John.

One of my boats had a Eska-based 9.9 hp outboard on it. Troublesome thing. I removed the decals, painted the hood white and got vinyl lettering made that said "NeverRude" to install on the cowling.

But, then, my current little 12' Aluminum Sea King boat has vinyl on it that says, "NOTLUND" where the manufacturer's name should go. I'm funny like that.

I went back and looked today, owner was not home. I looked them over pretty well. There are no serial plates on either motor, no plugs with #'s stamped in them under the hoods. Nothing that says omc anywhere.

But, they sure do have a familiar look to them and they do seem to have some omc part #'s in the castings in parts on the powerheads.

I guess someone is BS'N me........
