Well, with at least a million cattle crossing
the boarder between the U.S. and Canada annually.
How could anyone think that Canada could have
contacted Mad Cow disease with out our Friends
from the south being infected as well. Shouldn't
surprise any one at all.

Who eats beef anyway? The stuff has almost doubled in price and its not worth the money when I get done cooking it.
It's been pork and chicken and fish for the last few months for me. I've been waiting for the price to drop on beef and now it looks like its going to be a long time before that happens.

Jay, beef has doubled in price because Canada
your #1 supplier has been banned from selling beef
to the U.S. And your local beef suppliers are
making you pay through the nose.
Now that you have your own case of Mad Cow,watch
and see what happens at the supermarket.

I don't suppose the price will drop, but it should if this creates a lack of demand.

What has happened to the price of beef in Canada?

Re: Mad cow disease in Washington state?

Hey Homerr
Just up north of ya. Insteresting enough we had a local TV guy blow the whistle on this a year ago.
I heard an interview on the local "Talk Radio" with him last year. He got stomped on pretty hard and almost lost his job. This was on the "downed cows" being put into the food chain. The Beef industry has long fingers and greases a lot of palms. It was just a matter of time. They interviewed him on the radio again today. And the promises they made about not allowing downed cattle to be used, they never kept! Because of that and all the chemicals pumped into almost all commerical live stock. (and the way they are treated) We have started buying chickens from local growers. Mom and Pop along with the eggs and have made a deal with friend who just bought a 20 acre farm to grow pigs and beef for us. Also this was the first year in the last 20 that I went deer hunting to actually shoot one. Wouldn't just know it. This was the first time I wasn't able to get off a clean shot!! :(

I "grow my own" beef and pork on a friends farm about 20 miles from here. I slaughter a cow every other year, a pig every year and usually put a deer and/or bear in the freezer every year. The only meat I buy is chicken, and that is cheap enough.

You know what burns me up is the article. It says that no one in the US has died from the deisese. I gotta tell ya folks, thats BS! This is not I heard from a freind who said type of story. This one is true and I can can take ya to the grave and her family. A very dear freind of mine was having trouble with her sister. The doctors couldn't figure out what was going on for quite a while. When they figured it out they tried to keep it all hush hush. She had Crutchfeild-Jacobsons deisese, which is the human version of mad cow. This woman lived in East Texas, her sister who I worked with lives in between Buffalo and Palestine. Don't beleive everything they tell ya, it just ain't true.

I hear ya Mr Brown. But I don't think anyone knows enough about CWD, Mad Cow, or Crutchfeild-Jacobsons , to say they are related. Sure, they are similar, but did one cause the other? Most diseases just don't cross to other species.

I'm sure we all be dead (of old age) long before they/we know all the fact about this.

As predicted...

Many countries have banned the import of US meat according to the news I just heard.

There goes that industry.

On the other side, I think I'm going to buy another freezer, cause I bet the price of steak and hamburger is going to take a dive?

H.

Re: Mad cow disease in Washington state?

Hello Rosco.
The dairy industry was resisting the idea that johns disease(para-tuberculosis)in cows could have anything to do with the simular Krohn's disease in people. We know now that not only is there a connection, but we also know that para tuberculosis bacteria are not killed by pasteurizing the milk.
Nobody in their right mind in Europe would have slaughtered and destroyed millions of cattle if there was no connection between B.S.E.and Kreutzfeldt-Jacob disease.
The reason why the disease was discovered much earlier in Europe than in the USA,was because it is very difficult to detect the disease in cows until they are eight years old.In the US most of our meat never reaches that age, whereas in Europe much more of the beef comes from small dairy operations where cows have a higher survival rate up to that age.
Now for the better news.Downer cow meat is not exactly prime quality beef. Most of it ends up in sausages and the likes. And it is very much feed related.Your local farm friend who has beef out in pasture and does not use feedlot feeding practises will not have such disease in his beef.
Rolmops.

Re: Mad cow disease in Washington state?

It will be very tough on your cattleman, and all
related industries. Here prices for beef went
up for a while. Some places were selling ground
beef for very cheap, almost giving it away. But
the higher priced cuts remained expensive.
I am not in a cattle related industry but my
pay check was affected by it.
If you cant process your beef, then you have to
feed and graze.feed lots will be jammed. Look to
see plenty of cattle every were in the coming
months. It is a large industry, it will take time
but It will pass.

Re: Mad cow disease in Washington state?

I was told that there have been cases reported here in the U.S. but the media never really reports about it.
The cases I was told about were cases that had to do with wild elk.
If the disease is in wild game I would assume it can be everywhere.
If our beef is processed before the disease developes in cattle wouldn't it still be in the meat when it reaches our table? If thats the case we've lived with the mad cow disease for no telling how long with few reported cases. I guess its just another thing we'll all have to live with.
I was wondering why my girlfriend gets dumber year after year and now I think I have the reason.
Merry Christmas!!!!!

LET ME SAY THIS ONCE!THIS WILL CRIPPLE THE BEEF AND DAIRY INDUSTRY!ONLY BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE UN-INFORMED!YOU CAN ONLY GET THE DISEASE FROM EATING THE (BRAIN OR SPINAL CORD!)NOT THE MUSCLE TISSUE!!!DON'T ASK ME WHAT PARTS OF THE ANIMAL FASTFOOD PLACES BUY,BUT I CAN ASSURE YOU IT'S NOT THE PRIME CUTS.THEY'LL GRIND THE WHOLE S.O.B.!!!!
I THINK THIS IS JUST A WAY FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO BRING DOWN THE PRICE OF BEEF.D*MN THE LIBERALS!!!!!

Re: Mad cow disease in Washington state?

Wells fellas I raise beef to sell and I can tell you the prices may be up at the broker level but it sure isn't all that good at the sell barn.
Johnnie you are right the public isn't informed enough but watch those fast food restaurants they will jack the price up on a scrap Burger saying they can't get none. I have had buyers from assorted fast food chains that have called me wanting to buy anything I have in the way of beef they say if I can push or pull it on the trailer they will buy it.
I can tell you right now with the mad cow disease in the U S A I will probable loose about 30 to 40 thousand dollars this coming year. But I refuse to give up I will keep plugging on come rain or shine. I will probable double my herd size this year because a lot of smaller ones will go out and if I go down I will try to take a couple of banks with me :D

Hello Bubbakat.
I hope to g-d that you wont have to go down that way.I know from my own experience that being a cattleman is not a profession. It is a way of life and a very unique one at that.
Hoof and mouth got my herd and forced me to leave what I loved doing most.
As a matter of principle I will start eating more beef, not less.

Don't give up, and thank you for doing what you do.

Personally... I'm not that worried about it, but you get the fear running amok, and watch what happens.

H.
