i got me this boat. listed below, avatar. i like it. it handles well and suits my wants. i'd rather spend 10k on this boat than get on a new one. it has sentametal value to me too, 1st boat i couldn't stop slomn skin. to me it has three main issues. drive is questionable. holds 8 or so psi, lower drive shaft is spent, and speedi sleeved at upper seal.no water intrusion best i can tell. keeping a real close eye on that. ain't pulled drive yet but will before it sea's water next season. engine has 5.5 cyl. #1 at 60psi. dons will kill me for sayin this, but it runs pretty darn good for 5.5 cyl. 0- 4300 and holds steady at any rpm. floor & transom replaced but soft right before bow bucket. anyways. from what i read, a alpha1 upper and lower will R&R with a model 1. is that happeing? short or lack of funds. future thoughts for where i'm going with this ya know. might sell the ski and have me some funds......i'm likein boatin better than jetski'n....assumin i'm right that it will bolt up. will i have issues with proper gear ratio and length of input shaft from the IL6? any other issues that would prevent me from doing this. maybe i should try to rebuild my model 1. this boat seems salvagable to me an i'm lookin for input as to which direction i should go for the least bucks too. i'm a poor boater. looks like most parts are available for the model 1...amazing

years back a friend did just that. best I remember he had to reuse the old style, shorter, driveshaft and he had a machine shop make the aft trim anchor pin. but best I remember it was a fairly simple upgrade and a new aftermarket drive is usually less than 1500 dollars complete.

ps, this boat didn't let me down all summer. maybe a 75 hrs, + or - a few. every weekend at least once maybe twice + a few weekdays since mid june. this boat is amazing me. i thought boats were pretty breakable. even got me thru a good storm on the missouri river. what fun. this boat seems pretty broke too(old and worn out that is). all i want a realiable boat that will do a couple of hundred miles at one time. i like campin on the river.....

is this the proper sequesce of repair. drive, motor, hull? rodbolt. the drive i looked at was at dougrussel, 2500 round abouts. figure i could spened 1 to 1500 on the lower alone with the drive shaft bein spent.let alone doing the seals in the upper, minus anything else that's spent.....i thought 2500 was pretty reasonalbe for a new drive. don't think i want a sei drive. what are the chances of the rest of it being broke. gimble ring. transon plate. what ever else there is between the dive and the engine?

with a boat all bets are off. ya try to fix thjings before they break. I have seen gimbal bearings go 20 years with no wories with proper maint. let it get wet once from either no bellows maint or a sinking on the trailer and they fail. let the stringers or engine mounts go bad and the coupler fails, same with no occasional greasing of the shaft splines. not to mention replacing shift cables before they tear up a gearcase
in your freshwater environment they seem to last a lot longer. here in the saltpond by age ten its not uncommon to scrap the entire package.
depends on who maintained it and how thourough they were.

thanks for the insight rodobot. yep all bets are off i suppose. good way to put it. guess staying on top of what is known to be bad is enough anyways + regular pm. this boat has seen only freash water. but it has never had prevetitive maint. only after it broke was it fixed. i'm guessin most parts have been replaced on it. but for it to last another 33 years it's gonna need more help i think. thinking the alpha 1 might be a good way to get a start on it. thanks for the confirmatin that it will work. at least it is now seeing the grease that yer talkin about. so i'm trying at least. if i had more money i'd try harder though. :)

hahahahaha
I like that.
if I had more money I would try harder :) :) .
I goitta add that to memory. I am guilty of the same thing, its why I laugh when folks tell me to treat it like it was mine. I tell them no cant do that and still charge ya. boating can get expensive. I convinced a buddy to place 50 per month in a "boat" savings account and apply it only for routine maint not repairs. he managed to add a bit more here and there and now always has maint money and pays less in repair bills. while your buying parts and pieces look at converting the shift cable to the updated aft entry style. when you go back to the 72 models my memory gets fuzzy. most all them are long gone from my area.
