Have a '81 180 Wellcraft bowrider with perfect running L165 6 cyl. Wakeboard tower and some pretty tricked cosmetic upgrades but want more performance out of my motor. What r my options? Thot of the obvious like electronic ignition instead of points and upgraded coil. But what about flame arrestor? And how about so called performance plugs and wires? It's had a complete rebuild. But pretty sure went back with stock. And don't want to go back in motor unless I have to...any suggestions??? Carb? Thanks

Depending on your WOT RPMS you may be able to over prop it and stress the engine some. to get a bit more top end at the cost of longer to get on plane.

Buy a faster boat. Spending several hundred dollars to get 2 or 3 mph is a waste.

You could have a V8 . . . :D

Ayuh,....:D Welcome Aboard, Hambone,...

That little I6 will give ya all there is to give, with just a good Tune-up,...
The electronic ignition is nice to get away from points,...
But, that other stuff is a pipe dream, or a waste of money, yer choice...

as they said

apart from having it tuned up correctly the only change could be a prop change.

see how fast the engine is reving at full throtle to c if ur able to play a lill with it, its not magic but it can help!

The items you're talking about might add 1-5 HP at most. It's really not going to be noticeable to you.

Besides replacing the engine you could supercharge/turbocharge the engine. Looks like these guys can tailor make a system for you:

MARINE TWIN TURBO KITS-Carbureted MARINE TWIN TURBO SYSTEMS [] - - It's Free! : BOOSTPOWER USA , is an exclusive Worldwide provider of High Performance Marine and Automotive Performance Parts, Engines and Accessories, and Boats for Sale

I'm sure it won't be cheap, you'll end up paying for a number of subsequent upgrades to deliver the fuel to your engine, and you'll probably break something else in the drivetrain once you upgrade the engine as once you upgrade one component, you expose the next weak link in the chain.

add some smart tabs, may not give any more speed but it will FEEL like you added 50hp coming out of the hole. At least for me it did. my .02

Re: Make it go faster

Don't you think if GM and Mercruiser were able to significantly increase performance and maintain reliability from that or any other engine they would have done it to start with? You can spend a lot of money using the normal speed tricks (cam, compression and carburetion) but all you do is move the HP and torque figures up the rpm band. Since you have only one gear, this boat, unlike a car that has anywhere from three to about 8 these days, you would have a tough time getting on plane if at all. So spend all that money and lose performance doesn't sound like a reasonable path to go down.

Yes. I guess u r rite. Howeve, Gm, like Harley Davidson leave a lot to b desired Shen they come off the line. Have had plenty of success with after market parts on making my scooter extremely fast. But never even consider the transmission and getting outa da hole. That's my biggest concern. But thank u very much for ur knowledge brother!!!

Rite on! That's exactly what I'm looking for! So I search web for smart tabs? Something I could do or have to have installed?

He's right, if you searched before posting you would find hundreds of threads just like this, and they all end the samw way. The investment is just not worth the return when trying to make a boat faster than it was designed to be. Be happy with what you have or sell it and buy a go fast boat with a hull design and drive made to go fast, hense the name.

Re: Make it go faster

search right here on iboats store, thats where i got mine. smart tabs are about a hundred bucks and only take about a half hour to install. crazy easy for the performance gain. make sure you get the right size for your boat- i believe they go by horsepower and boat length
