Ok, I've got trouble. I know the results, but I don't know the cause.

I just purchsed a 1983 Mercury 80 HP outboard
Serial No: 6235628

Before I took it out on the water, I changed the water pump with a kit...that went fine. I cranked it and it seemed like it was Okay. But, when I got on the water, I realized it was hard to crank and when I finally got it cranked, it didn't want to go into gear without stalling.

Once I got into gear, I tested it and I got upto 7 MPH at WOT. NOT GOOD. After talking with my uncle, he suggested that I wasn't firing on all 4 cylinders.

I checked that out and he was right. It wasn't firing on Cylinders 3 & 4. So to test the coils, I switched 2 & 3. 2 still fired and 3 still didn't.

So, now I know it's most likely not the coils. I still have 3&4 without a spark.

After researching, I realize it could be a powerpack, stator or trigger.

Two questions: Is there any way I can test to find out which part is the culprit? And, what is the most likely scenario given the age and type of engine I have?

I am hoping to have this outboard back out on the water by this weekend.

Thanks,

Bryan

Re: Merc 80 HP No Spark on 3 & 4

Ok Yepblaze,
I went tohttp://www.homestead.com/dolphinmarineservice/Tech.html

and read the "Troubleshooting mercury (Alternator Driven Ignitions" section.

Topic 7 sounds exactly like my problem...Except it talks about the engine running rough and not necessarily about no firing at all. Given that, I looked at topic 9. Which I thought also sounds like it. But, after reading both of them, I'm very confused. I'm not a pro with a voltimeter...But I do have a nice one. When it starts talking about DVA I'm not sure where I set my voltimeter...and do I do the checks while someone is turning the engine over at the key? I appreciate the help. It just seems kind of vague. I also have no idea where the "kill wire
is and where it goes so I can follow the instructions correctly.

Thanks for any help...everyone..
Bryan

A DVA meter is a peak reading meter. You can use your meter in ac mode and I believe you should see roughly 70% of indicated voltage.

I don't have personal knowlege with your particular unit but on some it was possible to re arrange the wiring on the switchbox from the good to the bad sections to isolate the problem.

You may find more specific help at http://www.pfs-ware.com/kwast/mercboard/index.htm
