Ok, I've got trouble. I know the results, but I don't know the cause.

I just purchsed a 1983 Mercury 80 HP outboard
Serial No: 6235628

Before I took it out on the water, I changed the water pump with a kit...that went fine. I cranked it and it seemed like it was Okay. But, when I got on the water, I realized it was hard to crank and when I finally got it cranked, it didn't want to go into gear without stalling.

Once I got into gear, I tested it and I got upto 7 MPH at WOT. NOT GOOD. After talking with my uncle, he suggested that I wasn't firing on all 4 cylinders.

I checked that out and he was right. It wasn't firing on Cylinders 3 & 4. So to test the coils, I switched 2 & 3. 2 still fired and 3 still didn't.

So, now I know it's most likely not the coils. I still have 3&4 without a spark.

After researching, I realize it could be a powerpack, stator or trigger.

Two questions: Is there any way I can test to find out which part is the culprit? And, what is the most likely scenario given the age and type of engine I have?

I am hoping to have this outboard back out on the water by this weekend.

Thanks,

Bryan
