I've been lurking here for a long time and many overdue thanks to all of you who made it possible for an experienced boater but novice mechanic to swap out a mercuiser 188 motor for a fresh one in a boat that was intended for a 4.3 originally. Most fun I've had in years. I hope to be able to return the favor for someone elese here.

I'm down to re-installing the drive but what does the very end of the shift cable attach to? Anything? I already have the little wheel between the tabs ans the shift shaft coupling facing foreward, but it seems like there should be something on the end of that cable. It has a weird shape not to.

Here's a video that shows you how to put the drive back on... That might shed some light on what you're looking for...

Follow up-thanks for the video-drive went on very smoothly.

For any other newb with the same question-the cable end simply slides into the cavity on the drive. The knob on the end (yellow circle) doesn't hook, slide or connect with anything. Just make sure roller is between tabs and you're good. (red arrow)
