I have an 88 35hp mercury on a pontoon boat and a 71 80hp mercury missing lower unit that was given to me. the pontoon boat is an 88 and is posted 60hp max.
neither one has been started for a few years. can you give me an idea of how I should go about this. Is either one worth anything towards a trade or worth putting money into. Haven't checked compression yet.

Re: mercury motors

I would say the motor with no lower unit is worthless for a trade except to an individual. The 88 35hp is worth close to nothing to a dealer but possibly to an individual as well.
Neither are likely worth putting money into to sell UNLESS you can do the work yourself. NOt much profit in used outboards even if you can do the work yourself because parts and shipping are so expensive. The best bet would be to sell your motors for parts and put the proceeds toward a running outboard that you can test on a boat and determine if it is mechanically sound.
