I have a Merc 402 40hp that I have been told is 77 or 78.

It has a prop unlike my original motor with the boat. it seems to be a bit "longer" in the shaft instead of short like an airplane prop...

Anyways... it is really banged up and nicked. Almost looks like aluminum where is it banged up Is this a problem? Will there be any real benefit to spending money on a new prop for it? And is the shape normal for a merc? Or should it be more like an airplane prop style?

Re: Mercury prop damaged

You must've had a British Seagull on it before. That's the only motor I've ever seen with a prop that resembles an airplane propeller. Most props are made of aluminum, so that's not unusual. The amount of damage determines whether or not it needs rebuilding or replacement. Rebuilt props don't always perform as they did new, but usually close. I advise haveing at least two props so that you have a spare if one gets damaged badly. I also advise having two different pitched props, one for pulling and one for speed. Right above your post, click on Mercury Props and you'll see what's available.
