Well now you guys have me worried about trying to put this back together. I already have the parts ordered and everything in the upper cleaned up. All the gears and shafts looks good. I ordered all new bearings and seals. It sounds like I should take it to a shop to be put together though. Is there a way I can pressure and vacuum test it myself? I started looking for a replacement upper and it looks like it would be over 1000$ to do that!

I dunno' about tearing down and rebuilding an upper - it's past my skillset personally. But with some patience, you should be able to locate a working used upper gear case for under $400.

Personally, I don't think I'd have ever put $1,000 into a rebuilt upper.
