I know this is a no brainer but I need help! I have a 1983 Mercruiser 898 I/O with an upgraded 350 block. I was looking in the manual and it recommends using 25W-40 motor oil. I have been looking online and everywhere I look the price is ridiculous.

Would it hurt the engine if I use a automotive 10W-40 motor oil? If not, does anyone know if cheaper website to find this oil? Also, can I use a automotive antifreeze or do I have to buy a special marine antifreeze?

Thanks in advance.

Do not use a 10W-40 in or for anything except maybe burning brush. Its the worst wirght oil you can by, some engine manufactures even will void your warantee if they find you using it.

If you are not racing, or running the engine WOT everywhere you go and you use the boat as most people do, Cruising, tubing, ocational WOT, then you can use a Long Life or a diesel 15W-40 such as Dello 400. Many here do and it works fine for them. Otherwise use a CH-4 rated 40 wieght.

There is no reason to use a 15W-40 diesel oil (which won't meet the requirements) when you can use a straight grade, 20W-40, 20W-50 or the 25W-40 oil that will meet the requirements.
