wellwell,, whatdoya know,, my favorite mummer string band won 1st place this year's mummers parade.. fralinger string band..!! been routin' for these guys for many years now..

i knew they could do it.. this year the theme was skeleton pirates.. custumes, set, an musical was just great.. but thought there arch rival quaker city was better .. quaker came in 2nd or 3rd..

it's back on broad street after a three year stint on market st.. broad st is the original stomp.. everone glad it back to normal,now..

had the largest turn-out i ever seen.. i contribute it to the weather.. sunny ,lite wind & mid 50's F. .. never seen such nice weather jan 1st...

the crowds were heavy an that became a problem.. walkin' on the sidewalk up broad followin' the bands .. the closer to city hall ,, the more packed it got.. finally the sidewalk foot traffic came to a stop.. (gridlock if you will) nobody movin' or could move.. just stopped dead..

it was that way for 15 min. an kids an smaller folks started to panic.. people were pushin' into everone an knockin' kids down.. it really started to be an ugly scene.. an as soon as it got ugly it calmed down.. for some unknown reason.. PTL.. this situation could of got real bad real quick.. a short time after the crowd started to flow...

it was really weird.. never in such a situation like that... tell-you-what,, i'll never go to mardi-gra...

Re: mummers parade

it's philadelphia parade that dates back to pre-colonal times.. from a hodge-podge of different cultures.. the word mummer stems from europe.. to be online with mourner.. to dance & party & mourn out the old bad spirits an in with the new..

the famous 'muumers strut' which is very catchey & easy & fun to do ,, is best learned & done with the offical/unoffical theme song " 'o' dem golden slippers"..

it's a real blast..

the parade consist of different divisions
the comics.

the fancys,, no bands ,just big beautiful, fragile feathery costumes..

kids brigade..

an the string bands.. everone favorite..

these different catagories ( clubs ) spend all year dreamin'& thinkin' up a winnin' theme ... gettin'/ scroungin'up donations ,an makin' up the customes an sets..which one persons costume can cost $2,ooo bucs or more apiece.. hopin' to get voted number one an braggin' rights...

these mummers clubs take it very very seriously.. past down thru family tradition...

the different catagories,, start new years day,, way down south broad street an march up to the finale destination to be voted on at city hall...lites action cameras..

all i can say,, its pretty much drunkin' fun for all...

364 more days an countin'

Re: mummers parade

Crab Bait, I love the Mummers. For the last 20 years, the Quaker Sting Band has been coming to Mardi Gras Galveston. Every year they make a special appearance at one of the local bars and we reserve seating. We have a blast with them, especially the big guy. He must be 6'7". Their costumes are incredible and the band is definetly the highlight of our parades.

Mardi Gras is a blast. We belong to a Krewe and will start next weekend making our float for Fat Tuesday. The crowds here are kept under control for the most part. Along with the extra troopers and police brought in from surrounding cities like Houston, they call in the National Guard. :)
