My new computer

Yesterday I just finished working on building my new computer, which I plan to use for my architectural design programs since my laptop was running really slow with it and doesnt have enough memory to support the program the way I want to run it.

A few of the specs.....

1)500G hardrive
2)AMD 64 X2 dual core 4200
3)2G Ram
4) Dual DVD Burners

So here is my question. I had 2 jump drives that you can slip an SD card into that I have some programs and other stuff on that I wanted to put on this computer. The USB port would recognize that there was an external storage device present, but when I go into "My Computer" and the drive shows up completely blank. I put it in my laptop and everything shows up. So I took the SD card out of the jump drive and put it directly into the memory card reader that I installed and sure enough everything shows up. So I thought that maybe the USB port isnt working properly, but the mouse and keyboard are both working without issue, and it recognized my other jump drive right away and all the information showed up. So does my computer just not like that one jump drive?

BTW this thing is fast. The best upgrade though is probably the 22" widescreen LCD monitor......Even the iboats text looks big......8)

Yup that was the first thing I did when it would read the thing. After that my other jump drive worked so I thought the problem was solved............but then it still wouldnt read that first jump drive.

Re: My new computer

You've probably already did this, but your motherboard CD probably has USB 2.0 drivers and usually XPSP2 is required first. That's about all I've got. The closest thing I've seen (not exactly) is thumb drives that have been in a MAC.

What 386 said... USB 2.0 either not enabled in bios or drivers not properly installed.

Re: My new computer

Motherboard CD claimed that the driver didnt need to be downloaded with systems that had SP1 of higher. It wouldnt even load the driver since I have SP2.

I went through the BIOS again, but maybe I missed something. I'll just have to go through it again.

Make sure you scroll down the bios screen. I missed some setup because I thought I was looking at all the features, but overlooked that there were a dozen more if I scrolled down the page. In my bios there is definetly a choice of USB 1.1, 2.0 or disabled altogether.

Re: My new computer

Are you plugging it directly into a USB port on the mother board or on a front panel one connected with cables to a port on the motherboard?

Try swapping the mouse to the port you are pluggin it in to to determine that it is working etc.

Divide and conquer...you have determined that the USB drive is working...and that the usb port you have mouse on is working (well enough to support a mouse..but maybe not configured for a 2.0 device) Look in device manager and make sure that there are no (!) anywhere...

I know that everytime I build a pc...the USB drivers are always the last to get installed because they rely on the MB drivers to be installed correctly first. If there are no (!)...and everything else is working (sound etc) then try "Updating Driver" for the USB devices. It may find "a better match" now.

Good luck.
