need help with a 40hp mercury

I JUST PUT A USED MERC 40HP ON MY BOAT. I'M HAVING<br />TROUBLE WITH THE CONTROL CABLES.THER ARE TWO CABLES FROM THE CONTROL BOX,ONE IS IS GOING TO THE REVERSE/FORWARD GEAR LEVER AND THE OTHER TO THE THROTTLE.WHEN I MOVE THE SHIFTER ON THE CONTROL BOX IT GOES INTO GEAR BUT THE THROTTLE<br />CABLE DOES NOT MOVE.CAN SOME ONE PLEASE TELL ME<br />HOW THESE CABLES WORK.I THOUGHT THEY BOTH WORKED<br />TOGETHER.THIS IS MY FIRST INSTALL NEED ALL THE HELP I CAN GET.1979 40HP MERCURY

It is a mechanical thing. I take it you have a one-lever remote? The first portion of the movement should engage the gear without adding throttle. Once in gear the throttle alone should move. The lever operates quite long - are you sure you've moved it far enough?<br /><br />The remote box is straight forward. If you pay attention when taking it apart, assembling it should be no problem. If the throttle cable link in the box is broken you'll see it right away once in there.<br /><br />A manual for your motor is a DIY must and will save you several times it's price.
