I have a 12 foot Cub/Scow sailboat that was originally built by Reeds, out of Wayzata, MN. It was my grandfathers so I have some sentimental attachment and as well, it's a fun little sailboat that's great for teaching on small Minnesota lakes. That being said, it has been neglected for well over a decade sitting outside through some brutal winters and harsh sun exposure. I'm a well practiced woodworker but fiberglass(and sailing for that matter) is new to me. I would appreciate some direction on repairing the top side of this sailboat. It appears like it may have had some repairs at some point and time, but will require a lot of TLC.

For starters I've purchased: "The Fiberglass Boat Repair Manual" by Allan Viatses & "Fiberglass 101: Choosing the right resin for your repair or restoration project" by Boatworks today. https://www.boatworkstoday.com/product-category/downloadable-guides/

From those resources and combing over several YouTube repair videos, I'm gathering I will need to get the angle grinder out and clean up the failure areas that are showing obvious cracks/defects, than proceed to laying new glass down. Conceptually this seems simple enough, however I'm hesitant to start, as well not confident in how much those areas will need to be reinforced.

I would appreciate any advice on how to approach this project and if you happen to have links to any additional threads in this forum that would could be helpful

Sounds like a good little boat. Maybe post some pics of the whole boat, then a couple closer and closer to the specific area you've described.

Hmm... apologies, I included pictures per the photo tutorial under rules and guidelines section of forum. I'll try another method here.

So I'm assuming my questions are too vague, or maybe too simple to be thought of as being an actual question. So I'll try to be a little more specific as I'm completely new to any fiberglass repair. In the attached picture where I have indicated with arrows do I
(1) simply grind/sand away enough material to allow for new glass to be put down,

(2) Do I need to place any structure or support behind/underneath it or is the fiberglass sufficient? or do I need to remove material and than make a judgment call about supporting that area based on what I see.

Nice to see another Reed’s Cub Scow out there. I also have one that’s in need of some TLC. She has been out of the water since 1998, when my dad and I trailered her out here to Massachusetts from Minnesota, and a few parts came loose and were lost along the way. I have been searching for replacements on and off since then, but with Reed’s long out of business, I have had no luck whatsoever. Now my 16-year-old niece has developed a strong interest in sailing, I have a renewed incentive to try again to get this old boat back in the water.

The main thing I’m missing and having the hardest time replacing is the mast head. I’m thinking if I can get my hands on some pictures and measurements, I might be able to fabricate a new one.

I also need to replace the adjustable fasteners and pins that attach the shrouds to the shrouds to the deck (two came apart on the trip, and the one good one I had left I took off and gave to a friend who said he could help me find replacements - I haven’t seen him, or it, since then, and that was 20+ years ago). Luckily for me, the fiberglass still seems to be in pretty good shape, but the Reed’s builder’s plate seems to have disappeared.
