That's really some find. I'm not a dealer/collector so I don't know the worth. What ever you do, don't start it until you hear from the guys on this site. I just think it would be worth more un-started. Tell us the rest of the story. Rick.

Ah, nice. Collector value? Probably not much. They made so darned many of those 6hp outboards, and most of them are still hanging on the back of a boat. Typically, you can buy a good-running one for $250-$350. Since yours has never been run, you might be able to tack another $100 or so onto it.

If it's still in the original shipping carton, with the tank and everything, add another $100 or so.

Odds are that a pair of spark plugs go in, and it starts up on the third or fourth pull of the rope. I'd change the impeller, just because of age. Then, I'd hang it on the back of a 12' aluminum boat and go fishing, figuring I'd have a good outboard for many years.

One or two unused one of these shows up every year on the market, found in some old dealer's storage room or in someone's garage or basement...still in the original box. They make a heckuva nice outboard, but don't have much collector value at all.

Q: What is this motor worth?
A: Whatever someone else is willing to pay.

In your post you say ?I just bought it?, then I would say you?re probably the best judge of its current value.

The real question is, will you find someone who values it more than you. My guess is that it?s not likely you will find a collector who is willing to do that, unless you picked it up way under value.

You might find someone who for nostalgia reasons will desire your motor. I sold an older motor in great shape to a sail boat owner , he told me that it was popular for sailboat owners to use vintage motors. We were both happy after that sale

Good luck, be sure to let us know how it works out for you.

Cool find, I didn't know they shipped without plugs..?

EDIT: Your pics are too large for the screen. Please downsize them so that they fit. Thanks. JB

I remember yours. Didn't we all have a similar discussion last year about yours? Did you ever fire yours up, or are you storing it for posterity? :D

Just as a note, I've run across two others in the past year, either for sale, or in a message about someone who just got one. There must be a bunch of these sitting around, here and there, around the country.

Yes, it was mine we talked about. I never started it - I decided to keep it new for now. It's very tempting though....:)

I'll bet it's tempting. Now, that nice shiny 6 hp would look terrific on my 12 tinny. But, I've got a 1992 6hp on it, so I'm OK, even though it has a cracked cowling.

Enjoy! :D

There was a posting on this site late last year showcasing a literally brand new 1973 Evinrude 6, more or less your motor except for cowl shape and paint colour. Value? As was said, whatever anyone is willing to spend. They are fine little motors, but there is a practical limit as to what as to what one is willing to spend on it. I think that particular Evinrude went for $890. Finding anyone to pay that for your motor would be nearly impossible.

I was surprised when I found a 1951 Johnson 5 with only 1 season's use on it. It went for about $700, a very high figure. I don't want to say what I have into my restored 1950 Johnson 5, but I could only ever get a small fraction of what I have into it.

Here's a link to your motor as it should appear.
