Bought a new boat Thursday a 98 Four Winns with Volvo penta 4.3 GL and Corbra sx combination. Brought it home cleaned the boat up and fired it up running on muffs. Everything sounded good in the yard. Went to the lake on Saturday backed the trailer in the water and fired up the boat, it started right up and sounded good. We backed it off the trailer and headed out to open water at no wake speed. We hit open water started cruising around the lake. After about 10 min I smelled something burning, shut off the motor and opened the engine compartment. Smoke was pouring out, I looked to see what was causing the smoke and it looked like something had got melted all over the drivers side exhaust pipe after the riser but before the boot that ties it into the 'Y'. The riser on the driver side was super hot but the passenger side was hot but not to hot to touch for a few seconds. We got towed back to the dock by another boat I heard splashing in the bilge area and could see water coming in for the lower rubber boot on the drivers side exhaust pipe when we hit waves. I kicked the bilge pump on and it kept the water to a low level till we got it on the trailer. The Temp gauge on the dash was at 160 degrees before I smelled the smoke, I was watching it pretty close since it was my first time on the water with the boat and wanted to know where it would normally run. Couple of questions.....
1) How bad did I screw up my new boat?
2) What temp should it start circulating water to the engine and exhaust or should it all the time?
3) What should I check first?

1) How bad did I screw up my new boat?
Hard to say without some serious checking.

2) What temp should it start circulating water to the engine and exhaust or should it all the time?
The raw water pump should put water out to the exhaust anytime the engine is running.

3) What should I check first?
Impeller would be first, then check the manifolds and risers to find out if they are plugged up, and pull the thermostat housing and see if all the openings for it are clear.

Re: New Boat first trip the lake Overheating problems

Thanks Don... I pulled the hoses from the thermostat housing and there is no water flow at all. The water pump below the motor does not seem to be moving any water. I am going to check the impeller now and look for any blockages, and check the thermostat. I assume I have to pull the riser and the exhaust elbow both to get to the exhaust boot that connects the bottom of the elbow to the exhaust 'Y'? Space gets tight way back there. :) Thanks Again.

The riser does not have to come off to access the rubber boot. But while you have the elbow off to get to the boot, you might as well pull off the riser and check for blockages like Don said.

Did you get any warranty? Was it from a dealer? If a private party does the bill of sale say "as is"?

The drivers side manifold is plugged not flowing any water. The impeller is bad not moving any water up the the water pump below the motor. Going to pull the thermostat housing when it cools off a little and check it also. On the search for parts now. Thanks for the help I am sure I will have more questions the further I get on this.

I am think it may be a good idea to get this boat to the shop and let them go through it, I don't want any more surprises.
