Okay I have been fooling around with the cables a little. It has forward and neutral but when I put it in reverse nothing. The cable moves and it seems to shift but nothing engages. Now I just bought this boat 2 days ago knowing of this problem. I was hoping it would be simple. Would low fluid effect this ? I was told no work had been done recently. I want to change the water pump and fluid but that's about all I know how to do. what else should I look for ? Thanks

Unhook the cable at the motor and see if it will manually shift.
Also drop the gear oil and look for metal shavings on the drain plug magnet.

Re: no reverse 1994 150 Johnson

After unhooking the cable I cannot get it to go into reverse manually. I went to check the lower oil and as soon as I opened the bottem screw oil came pouring out, just a dark blue, no metal. Would the oil look very dark blue if it hadn't been changed recently? I just bought the boat, the son joined the Navy and the parents did not know if any work had been done on the lower end. They thought not. Thanks

low Oil will not cause your problem, clean Oil is a good thing, but not being able to select Reverse manually is not so good, make double sure that the gear lever (on the Motor) is fully moving into reverse, while slowly turning the prop, if not, then "surgery" will be required.

It moves slightly into reverse or it apears to but it never engages. If I have the engine on and really try to force it the engine starts to die out.
