Ok, lets start an argument about antifreeze... Maybe

I read that you can use anti-freeze to stop the rot in stringers.

I'm not totally against that as long as you dispose of it properly...

My question: Could a person treat the bilge with antifreeze on occasion?

Would it do any good?

H.

The anti-freeze is interesting and I'm trying it out in an area of my boat. I doubt that treating the bilge would do much good unless you have exposed wood down there . Most wood is incased in fiberglass and the rot will only start if it is exposed - like motor mounting holes in the transom or things screwed to the floor.

Yes, I realize the wood is encased, but I was wondering if the presence of antifreeze would help prevent the rot from forming.

H.

In order for the antifreeze to work, it would have to be absorbed or injected into the wood. I don't think there would be enough, if any, exposed raw wood that would be able to absorb the antifreeze down there. And drilling holes and injecting it would probably cause more harm than it would solve and give rot a good place to start. A good question, but I don't think it would work as well as we'd like.

Uh, oh, Homerr....just saw your last photos. Are you doing the same thing you chided the manufacturer for? Those nice new stringers don't look like treated wood...
Just kidding....I know you say you're going to resin coat. What kind did you settle on?
