Old Merc/ old Johnny question

People throw stuff my way. Picked up an old 18hp Johnson with a froze block (pistons rusted to the walls now from sitting). Serial# J(?)D12 1708849..late 50's? White cowling with brown stripe. Except for the block, in good shape.Good rope start, lower and prop <br /> Also a 1960 Merc 100(10hp)in good shape except for both plug holes stripped, and top of carb float bowl missing. Spark, good lower and prop okay.<br />Now... fix, part out, ebay, lawn ornament, boat anchor,....any opinions?

Fix the Johnny, Robby. <br /><br />Let the Mercsperts advise you on the Merc.<br /><br />The Johnny J series were all little engines like 3hp.<br /><br />The Johnny 18s were FD series, the FD-12 was made in 1958. Wanna recheck the plate? Sometimes when you know what should be there they are easier to read. I had a FD-12 and it was a great engine.<br /><br />Good luck.

White with a 'Holiday Bronze' stripe would be consistant for '58.<br /> '58 18hp, click here.<br /><br />If it's just the pistons that are frozen, free it up w/ Marvel mystery oil or a penetrating oil and check out the compression. If that's good and the l/u is good, it's probably worth fixing up.<br />If the crank & bearings are frozen, or the cylinders are in really bad shape, then it's probably not worth fixing. Hunt around for another block - there should be lots to choose from.

that Merc 100 is a spring shift and you would need some special tool if it needed a water pump, most dealers thru theirs away in the 1960s save your self some grief and throw it away. I been repairing mercurys since the 50s and that s about the worst one the built as far as servicing--bob

For the merc check with the guys at Johns Pld Mercury Web Site at www.pfs-ware.com.<br /> We had a 61 Evinrude 18 basically the same.<br /> It was a great motor.Generally speaking the Johnson is easier to wotk on than a Merc.We used to do a lot of stuff with a pair of pliers,crescent wrench and a screw driver.Routine parts are still readily available.

Yep, thats gotta be an "F". It sort of looked like an "I", an knew of the "J"s, so I guessed. The motor was found, head pulled, shoved in a outside pile of parts, and neglected. Have no idea what parked it, but guessing lack of oil as the plug threads are in great shape, so no reason for the head off. I'll have to keep an eye out for block parts.<br />On the Merc, think I will pull the good stuff and ebay. And if it wasn't for the pollution problem it would cause, it would make a great float anchor. That is the HEAVIEST 10 horse I seen! Thanks for the replys and info guys. Robby

Great site...love the old Merc pics. AND reminds me of all the Mercs I have had. And all the WORK they needed, even though I loved'em anyway! Beautiful motors. Needless to say, the old Johnny may float again, but I'm gonna put the Merc out of its misery piece by piece. Thanks for the site, Robby
