OMC Tilt motor - which one is the right one?

Hi everyone,

I'm replacing my tilt motor on my OMC I/O. The part number on it is 18-6755 omc 982706.
When I search in google for OMC 982706, I find a bunch on Amazon around $60 new.
But as soon as I add 18-6755 to the search they're all over $150. It seems to me like the $60 one is identical but I'm pretty new to this stuff and wanted your opinion.
Here is the $60 one on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Power-Motor-Evinrude-982058-982706/dp/B003Q7WXFE
and the over $200 one at walmart: Sierra 18-6755 Tilt Motor-OMC 982706-: Outdoor Sports : Walmart.com

Any difference?

Thanks in advance!

Can't say for sure on the models you posted but suffice it to say that the bargain basement tilt motors DO NOT develop sufficient torque to do the job. I really do not know how to tell one aftermarket motor from the other. Sometimes price could be an indicator but I am not sure if there are those selling the cheap ones for a high price.

Although I like a bargain, like the next guy, I would find a trusted, local OMC guy and pay the piper by buying through him. There are reasons that those tilt motors die and there are some tricks to prolong their life.

You also did not say what year your setup is. There was a two wire motor up to '77, then a sealed three wire motor til the end.

Here is a picture of a '78 OEM 3 wire, sealed motor.

Thanks. This is the one I have. It's the three wire one 1983 I believe (That's the age of the boat).

the aftermarket ones are typically weak. I'd also recommend a new OMC one. $250 or so, but should last 20 years and even keeping your focus short term, you know it will actually work. Considering the task of changing it, it's something you don't want to do more often than necessary.
Those Sierra ones like to break at the fork end of the shaft. If you look carefully at your old one there, it might be split.

I recently bought a 1986 boat I'm in process of restoring. One of the things I found not working was the tilt motor. Rather than try and repair I thought I'd check on a new one--well just like you the 2 wire system for as little as $50.00 that looked the same--but the 3 wire ones were $250. and more.
Well I went back to the repair route. I took the motor off and opened it up to find the brushes were stuck and one spring on them was broken. It is really very easy to do. However, if you're not into that most any auto alternator shop can rebuild. I gave Iboats Parts Dept the number of mine and they sent me a rebuild kit for about $25.00. The kit is 2 brushes, 2 springs, a O" ring gasket for each end of motor and 1 small special "O" ring that seals the shaft. Good Luck.
