Hello fellow boaters. This is my first post and hope someone can help me out. I need to replace or at least clean my trim motor on my 1978
OMC stringer drive. Not the tilt motor, but the trim motor located in front of the engine. I cannot get both long screws out. Can I take the whole housing off?
I started to and realized there is a lot of pressure on it from the spring I believe. Will this come flying off with parts scattering? What is the easiest way to remove trim motor to replace and or clean? Thanks in advance for any help. Steve

Welcome aboard:

I never had a problem pulling the two screws holding the trim motor in, but if it's getting you trouble: Try supporting the engine from below (scissor jack below the engine), and disconnecting the jack screw at the engine front. You should be able to remove the pressure from the assembly that way.

Thanks for the reply Captain, unfortunately one of the screws I almost against the boat. Not enough room to take it out. That's why I was wondering
If the tension could be taken up with something. Like you said, I can get a sizzor Jack down there and remove the whole housing. Thanks again, will give it a try.

Did you make sure that the solenoids are working ? If you have to remove the motor use the scissors jack like said before. Most of the time the brushes are stuck in their holder. If your motor has a hex nut where the wires are, remove the nut and dig out the "O" ring hold the wires while pulling the cover back. Hopefully the rear of the armature shaft is not frozen into the bushing. To remove the armature push out the roll pin . Sometimes the commutator is badly pitted from not getting a good connection from the brushes not having good contact.

Ok so I got the motor out. It was stuck so I cleaned it and got it to move. I tested it with the battery and it spins with both blue and green wire. I also replaced the selonides. I put the motor back in and all it does is tick from selonides. Just clicking sound. I'm wondering if it could be stuck inside where u put the Greece in. Looks to be great inside there. Will keep trying. Thanks for the help.

Make sure that the solenoids have current to them. Were the solenoids marine style that are known as "non grounded base". If you used the auto style and attached the small wire that is on the "I" side of the solenoid try disconnecting that wire.
