Okay Johnson and I guess Evinrude guys. Somebody has got to know this answer. I am nearing the reassembly of my 1976 Johnson 40 HP OB (40E76R) and I have a problem figuring out how this spring is supposed to fit. I understand how the entire reverse lockout works, but I can't figure out how the spring attaches or what its purpose is. Anybody that has a similar setup can you chime in or tilt your engine and take a picture...? PLEASE! The front Press for Reverse Lock works perfect so what is the spring for and how does it attach to the pivot bolt and/or reverse lever??????????  :embarassed:

Sorry, I don't have one to take a picture of, but I can tell you what it is there for. It keeps the tilt lock release lever from vibrating and rattling.

Well that's better than anything I could have guessed. When I removed it initially during the disassembly, I thought, don't worry, you have the original shop manual for everything. Well the original shop manual doesn't even acknowledge it what-so-ever...go figure... The reverse lock lever works perfect and therefore I couldn't figure how that spring was supposed to attach or why... Not sure how it is supposed to fit or attach there but thanks for your input...I appreciate it.
