I forgot to put the flush cap back on a rebuilt 1975...5.7.
She got up to 225 degrees before i realized and corrected the problem.
My question is how hot is to hot? Still runs great and at 190 degrees all day.

the exhaust rubber and flappers have long since been burned up.

190 is way to hot unless your running a heat exchanger with a 180 degree thermostat and your in a 105 degree body of water.

The freshwater flush cap for the water hose inlet. Its 1975 electric shift 240 o.m.c outdrive. powered by a chevy 350 with a 185 degree thermostat. it's supposed to run at 190degrees but got up to 225 being closely watched and immediately shut off at 225 degrees

A small block chevy engine can tolerate 240 - 250 degrees on a closed cooling system for a short period provided it gets a very gradual cool down. Water boils at 212 at sea level in an open cooling system so bad things can happen quickly. If you caught this quick enough and things seem normal you dodged a bullet to the wallet. Thermal shock by a sudden influx of cold water can warp things..
