Just trying to get some testimonials on newer (late 90's to present) Mercury's. I'm currently looking at buying a new 90 hp Merc and was wondering what the general census is. The "Force" wasn't with me on my last engine.

Re: Opinions on newer Mercs

I have a 2002 90 hp Merch (Saltwater Classic). This motor is nothing short of bullet proof. Plenty of power, starts easily, and it's pretty easy on the gas. They don't idle the best, but above 1200 rpm's, they are fantastic. I have around 200 hours on mine of pretty hard fishing, tubing, most all in saltwater. Not a hint of corrosion. I'd highly recommend it!

Also, the simplicity of design is perhaps the best feature. Easy to work on and diagnose problems. Let me know if you have any questions or need details.

dakota,

I'm not the biggest Merc. fan. But, my family has a 99 model 75 hp on a pontoon. It has been absolutely flawless. The only thing we've ever had to fix was the trim switch on the throttle handle.

The 75 is the same basic engine as the 90 hp.

Dont link Force to a Merc. Mercury did own Force, Which was the old Crysler outboard, they just built the old motor with a new name. I am a OMC guy, but a Mercury, from what I know is a very fine motor. Merc guys love them. Id buy one based on a reputation that is a very good one.

Re: Opinions on newer Mercs

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. I would like to buy a Honda, just because I know they build good engines, but they are a little spendy  . Not that a new Merc isn't. Mercury dealers/shops are about the only ones in the area. There are a few Yamaha dealers, but not very many. The crankshaft on my Force broke, and to get a remaned head would cost me about about 2 grand less....so I might as well go with a new Merc and know I have something for hopefully years to come. Thanks again!
