Latest issue on the Sunbird. The outdrive position gauge is not working. I just recently had the bellows and outdrive water pump replaced. I can't swear to it but I believe the gauge was working prior to taking the boat to have the work done. I know it was working a month ago when I first bought the boat and it hasn't been in the water yet. Is it likely something was not reinstalled back on the outdrive after the bellows and water pump replacement. I know it's guesswork at this point but is there a connection I can check prior to calling the marina where the repairs were done. (By not working I mean doesn't move at all)

They may have messed up the trim position sensor. From what I hear it's allot of work to get it working. The common advice when someone posts about this is to trim by feel. The gauge is pretty worthless once you learn to trim be feel.

Its possible if they werent careful they might have broke the arm of the sender.

Re: Outdrive Guage inop.

Not sure if this is applicable to your drive, but I've got OMC/Volvo joint venture Cobra SX drive, and sometimes I have to completely lower my drive and then back up a little in order for it to start reading. Not sure if you can completely lower your drive while on the trailer though.

When I first pulled my drive and re-installed it, mine did the same thing, and I thought I had messed something up. Once I got it back in the water and cycled it up and down a few time, it started reading the position again.

Like I said though, not sure if your trim sender is similar to mine.

Hmmm...interesting. I can't find anything broken, loose or missing by the arm. I don't really know if I will need to depend on the guage or not. I'm sure at some point I will feel the right plane. I think I'll wait and see what happens once its in the water. Worst case, i suppose is learn to plane by feel.

88 Cobra trim sender wiring mod.jpg

These things don't last all that long. There are no more OEM sending units but Sierra makes a replacement (that I have on my boat and actually has outlasted the OE ones). They are difficult to replace because of how the wiring is snaked through the transom mount, right by the water tube connection. It comes out inside the transom by the steering arm and is nearly inaccessible. What my mechanic did was re-route the sending unit wiring out the side of the transom mount and then ran it up the side of the transom like a transducer cable. And now it takes 10 min to change and is an easy job. I just cut the plug off and run the wire through the transom under a clamshell cover, sealed with Life Seal and connect the wiring inside the boat. Very easy.
