Has anyone bypassed both their pump AND rack?
I have a leak on my 1988 5.7 Alpha One that I'd rather not bother repairing yet if there's a way to disconnect the rack. I had removed the belt with ease but the steering effort was immense, almost impossible likely due to pushing dead fluid around through the system. There's no way it's this difficult to turn a single out drive.
For now I'm stocking up on fluid to get us thru the season and shopvaccing the bilge out every week.
Any advice on how easy or difficult it might be to mechanically disconnect the rack?
Or better yet any advice on usual suspected leak points?

The bigger the motor the more effort it takes to steer. Most can manage with a older 4 cylinder motor, but know of no one able to do it very well with a V8. You can remove the pump and the steering effort needed to turn will be the same, with or without the ram. The effort you feel with the motor off steering, is all that is there when the motor is running. All the extra effort comes from the prop

As for the leak points, there are not many and in most cases its the hoses that connect to the cooler

Thanks for the advice. I’ll bring her into the shop this winter and track down the leak. I guess I'll start doing my stretching exercises now. :/
