powerhead failure

I recently had a Yamaha 115 four stroke (2001) go down with a ruined powerhead. It didn't get winterized last fall by someone who offered to do it, and apparently some water built up in the fuel and caused the engine to blow while transporting some fishing gear. I have seen two strokes take some serious abuse as far as contaminated fuel, surf zone dunkings, ect, and I'm a bit surprised that a little water would ruin a four stroke so extensively. My local marine shop calls for a complete powerhead replacement on an engine with less than 150 hours of total running time. Should a little water do so much damage?

Re: powerhead failure

Water is a foreign material in any engine. An engines ability to take abuse/lack of maintenace should not refect on the durability of any line of engines.

The engine did not fail, someone did not maintain it properly.

Re: powerhead failure

its a very easy & cheap job to fit a filter/separator into the fuel line. I have one on my little 8hp, and it's taken 12 years of old, and marginal fuel without a hiccup.

Surf zone dunking would be the best kind of contamination, since the motor would stop quickly. Through the fuel line is another story.
