pressure tank primer

Tank works fine, holds pressure fine, but when I use the primer button, it leaks fuel from around the shaft. Only leaks when priming. Is there an o-ring I need to replace? I take it I'm going to have to pull the whole assembly off the metal tank itself to service. What are the odds that I'll need a new base gasket? Here's a photo.

Re: pressure tank primer

I have heard that the repair kits are available from laingsoutboard.com

It looks like you have the metal button. It is a different kit for the plastic buttons.

The diagram I looked at show's no o-ring, just a diaphram gasket, but that was for a 58 tank. AOMCI has a few tank diagrams on the site showing the different tanks.

I have a scan of the tank from a 1956 Evinrude, but it is too large to post. PM me if you would like a copy. From what it looks like in the picture, there is no seal, but you might have a leaky diaphragm. Rick

Two things can cause fuel to leak up around the button shaft. No, four.

1. The diaphragm is porous.
2. The diaphragm support washers are bent or rusted out.
3. The push button shaft is corroded at the bottom end where it goes through the support washers.
4. The nut has come loose at the bottom end of the shaft. Now for a word on that: The button is supposed to rotate freely on the shaft. If it does not rotate freely, there is a tendency for you to unknowingly rotate it and the shaft when pushing down on it. That unscrews the nut and it will leak.

The cure is the same in all cases--take it apart and fix it. Yes you will need a new tank gasket and diaphragm. Possibly new support washers and button shaft. And make sure the button rotates freely on the shaft.

Thanks Rick.. I'll rip into it. I have several other pressure tanks w/non-functioning primers, and I'll know what I'm doing after tearing down this one.

I have a plastic button one that has leaked there for awhile with no other adverse effects... I just leave it alone and it works fine.

nymarin e.ca has what you need. Diaphram most likely. Also gasket. Tims probably has it too.

Same for mine. I just don't worry about it. If I need to tip the motor up I disconnect the gas line first. When it's refuel time, the carb usually has enough gas in it to start and get the pressure built back up.

Re: pressure tank primer

Thanks for the input, guys! I'll dig into it soon, and I'll be well-versed on fixing a few others I have w/non-functioning primers. Thanks again!

Re: pressure tank primer

It sounds like a tear in the diaphram. Part number 302563.
