problem with gimbal housing

I am restoring a 1976 233 mercruiser and found that about 3-4 inches of the lip that bellows clamps to is broken off. I installed metal ring around housing and formed a new lip with marine JB Weld. Turned out perfectly round and seems to be very strong. Since the only stress will be the bellows clamp, I thought this might work. Any thoughts from anyone? Thanks for any advice, Brent Housing for gimbal bearing is fine.

I'd run it and then pull the out drive back off and check for leaks you definently dont want water in there, just my 2 cents

Thanks for the input, think I will try it. Don't really want to change gimbal housing if I don't have to. Previous owner had tried to fix with some white stuff that was a mess. Guess thats why ujoints were rusted. Thanks again

frank yours doesn't need repaired.... the exhaust bellows doesn't even need to be installed except to make things quiet.....

There is no way I would run this one though..... I had a ujoint bellows start leaking on me and I can tell you it was leaking alot of water..... could sink your boat... You could have it repaired but I'd say welding would be in order

I have the same chunk out of my transom piece. There is a kit on the market that will repair it. It is nothing but some expxy JB weld stuff that repairs it similar to how you did yours.

I also did what you did with yours. It has held up for over 2 years now.

I busted a u joint and from the driveshaft flopping it broke off a piece of that ring that you clamp the bellows to. I welded it and grinded smooth and so far its good to go its dry anyways. thats what I thought you was referring to
