I have a 1986 50hp force, with a problem in the
lower unit. The porp is not spinning enough to
move the boat through the water.I thought maybe
I needed a knew prop. I bought one and I still have the same problem. The engine runs fine, but you you have to really open up the throttle just to get the boat to move. Any suggestions?

I'm betting you're not running on both cylinders. Pull the sparkplugs and take a look how they're burning. They should have dark brown deposits. Black means it's running too rich, clean means it's not firing on that cylinder.

Re: Problems with 50hp force

The engine is running fine. both sides are firing
both sides have good compression. My problem is
in the lower unit. The propeller isn't turniing as it should. This just recently started.I don't know
anything about lower units but I'm thinking maybe
bearings or something of that nature. It shifts
into gear fine and while its in gear you can't turn the propeller by hand, but when its in the water the propeller dosen't turn at full force.

Re: Problems with 50hp force

Did you buy a "new" prop? or a used prop?

Lots of props with spun hubs for sale on ebay. Even some new props have defective hubs.

Take the prop of and scribe or draw a line from the hub to the housing. Take it for a test ride and then remove the prop and check the line. If it is still lined up, prop should be ok. If not, then the hub is spun.

How fast will the boat go? 2mph, 10mph?
Any unusual noises coming from the lower unit?

Is the exhaust snout still in place on the motor?
It is located directly above the prop and directs the exhaust away from the prop to prevent ventilating. It wouldn't be the first one to fall of, or be stolen.
