Putting a VP280 back together...

hey all, i'm just finishing a transom and stringer repair/replacement, and wondering how i might best put this back together. it's a volvo penta 280 and an AQ260. here are two questions in no particular order:

-rubber rings: does anyone have a part number for the rubber rings that are supposed to go on each bolt of the the transom shield? should they be installed in between the transom shield and the transom, or in between the head of the carriage bolt and the transom shield?

-i guess i'll drop the engine in with bell housing attached and then align it (i might have lost some of my geometry so this might take me a minute). after that i'll install the clamp ring and really crank those bolts down? i assume those bolts get torqued pretty hard (the clamp ring was a total beast to remove). maybe tightening these bolts will even slide the engine forward slightly if i haven't bolted the engine mounts in yet? there a certain torque i'm aiming for?

thanks!

Go to volvopentastore.com, go to the parts breakdown ( pre 1989 motors)

The PDS housing has a little boss at 3, 9, and 12 o-clock positions. The gap between the transom shield and thos bosses should be approximately equal for all 3 of those (should be within 1.5mm /.060",)

Removing the clamp ring is easy. Pull the 6 bolts. Put 3 in the threaded holes and jack it off the PDS.

Suggest you get the factory service manual

Thanks Scott
What I’m wondering about is putting the clamp ring back in though. I’ll push the motor as far as possible to the stern and align it, but I assume that in tightening the bolts the motor will pull a little bit to the stern? Is there a certain torque I’m aiming for? Or just get them good and tight ?

You align as you tighten the clamp ring.

You tighten it in a star pattern.

Torque is only about 18-22 ft-lbs. You are only dealing with 3/8 fasteners threaded into aluminum

Suggest you get a factory manual

Sorry to beat a dead horse on this but I don’t want to strip anything out. Right now the bosses on the pds are about 3/4” from the bosses on the transom shield. I know this gap will need to come in quite a bit. At what point am I counting on the bolts from the clamp ring to pull everything into place? Should I start tightening them in a star pattern now? Should I try and jack the engine around until I get it close to 1/2” of separation? 1/4”? I don’t know how much I should be counting on these bolts as opposed to struggling to force the engine towards the stern with brut force. Thanks!

With the motor hanging, start tightening

Ah dang I was supposed to do this with it still hanging? Oof that was a mistake. Marina crane got it as close as possible and then I thought I was supposed to finish it off with the weight on the stringers. Ok I’ll have to try and schedule the crane again.

So basically with it hanging I start to tighten bolts and align until I’m at my proper torque, and then drop the engine mounts down till they take as much weight as possible and release it from the crane?
