Question about gas/oil mixture

I apologize for the ignorance of this question... :D

I just bought a 84 Glassport with a late 70's model Evinrude 85 HP. I am new to (almost) any sort of outboard engine. My question is this.

On the cap for the gas tank, it says : Gas. Now, on every engine I've ever owned that required a gas/oil mix the cap would say gas + oil. Do I mix the gas and oil in the gas tank or is there some other way of delivering the oil?

The gas tank is currently empty. I can't examine the old gas.

I know this sounds a little sad for me to ask, but again I'm new, and I don't want to mess anything up.

Re: Question about gas/oil mixture

Pre-mix at 50:1 for that motor. 1 pint of TCW-3 oil to 6 gallons of gas.

Re: Question about gas/oil mixture

It's going to need a gas/oil mixture at 50:1. Use oil rated for outboards, it should say TCW-3 on the container.

Re: Question about gas/oil mixture

Don't feel foolish for asking, wes. I remember getting a call from my young son at work one day. He knew I was very busy and did not have time to just chat. He made it quick and to the point: "Dad, the mower is out of gas. Do I have to add the gas/oil mix or just straight gas. I don't want to mess up"
Never interrupted with a better call at work.

Re: Question about gas/oil mixture

That is a very good example, Blackhawk. I know of some outboards that have use standard 30 weight oil, but didn't think this one did. The reason I was concerned was because the gas cap didn't say gas = oil.

Thanks for the help, guys!
